The Vow Does Not Keep Itself

You got home with the day still on your clothes, and the sharp word came out before the door was shut. She answered. You answered harder. The kitchen light is on and nobody is standing in it. The plate sits in the sink. She has taken the far side of the bed, back to the door. You tell yourself morning will cool it. You have said that on other nights, and the cold was still there at breakfast.

Paul does not tell you to pretend the anger is gone. He tells you not to sin with it, and not to haul it into the dark. You have been calling the wait wisdom. It feels like strength to let her sleep and save your pride for morning. The text will not bless that. Wrath left overnight starts clearing a place for the devil. By breakfast the argument has a story, and the story is rarely true. A vow said once does not keep itself. It is kept, or left, before the house goes dark.

Going back will cost you the last word. She may not meet you halfway tonight. Say the true thing anyway. Name what you said that cut, and leave the defense in the hall. Christ did not wait for you to cool off before He came near. He crossed while you were still turned away, and He still does. The mercy is not that the fight never happened. It is that you can still knock.
