Today’s Truth

You Were a Man Before the Job

Proverbs 4:23 · World English Bible

You are sitting on the tailgate in the gravel lot behind the supply yard, and the foreman already drove off. The job wrapped early. They do not need you next week. Shingle dust is still on your boots, and the group text has gone quiet. You keep unlocking the phone like the next line might put your name back on the list. A man can look useful at sunrise and feel erased by noon. You have been letting a schedule tell you whether you exist.

Your instinct is to get hired again before the quiet gets loud, as if the next job will put you back together. Solomon cuts across that. He does not ask what you do for money. It tells you to keep watch over the heart, because that is where a life actually starts. You have been guarding the paycheck and leaving the inside open. A slow week can pour contempt in there if you let it. The Father is not waiting on a foreman to decide whether you count.

Keeping the heart will cost you the story that says you are nothing until someone hires you again. You will have to name the shame before it settles in and starts giving orders. That is not a small job. Mercy meets you there anyway. The Lord knew you before a single envelope had your name on it, and Jesus does not take the name back when the crew list shrinks. You are not waiting to become a man. You are a man who has to guard what is already his.

Today’s Challenge

Before tonight, say your full name out loud to the Father and refuse to add a job, a loss, or a number after it.

Pray

Father, the lot is empty and I keep checking a phone that has nothing new to say. Guard what is in me so this week does not become my name. Hold me in Christ until I can hear who I am without a paycheck. Amen.
